Brooklyn-based nonprofit Powerhouse Arts is bringing its fabrication expertise to the heart of Manhattan through its participation in Making Love, the newest iteration of Times Square’s beloved Valentine’s tradition. Now in its 18th year, Love in Times Square returns to Duffy Square with a dynamic installation that celebrates romance in all its forms.
Presented in partnership with Times Square Arts, the public art arm of the Times Square Alliance, Making Love reframes love not only as passion, but as labor, craft, and collective creation. Powerhouse Arts, known for supporting artists through large-scale fabrication and production, played a key role in bringing the ambitious sculptural concept to life.
Designed as an immersive, pop-up card or “carousel book,” the installation features four distinct faces, each illustrating a romantic scene rooted in New York City iconography — from a lush botanical garden to a neighborhood bodega and a winding canal. Positioned in the electric energy of Duffy Square, the piece doubles as an Instagram-ready backdrop and a ceremonial stage. On February 14, couples were able to exchange vows within the artwork itself, transforming public space into a site of shared celebration and civic love.
