Karole Biron Commissioned for Landmark Jacques Cartier Bridge Artwork

Fresh off her 2025 CODAawards win, artist Karole Biron has been selected by The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) to create a major new public artwork for the South Shore entrance to the Jacques Cartier Bridge. Scheduled for installation in 2026, the sculpture—titled Intersection—will complete the final phase of the area’s redevelopment and stands poised to become a new cultural landmark for the region.

Biron was chosen through a Canada-wide, two-step competition that invited applications and proposals from artists across the country. A multidisciplinary selection committee evaluated submissions for conceptual strength, originality, symbolic resonance, timelessness, and the artwork’s ability to integrate harmoniously with its surroundings. Public input also played a key role: a 2024 national survey identified History and Heritage as the preferred theme, with Peace and Respect emerging as core values. Proposals were further encouraged to incorporate sustainable practices and recycled materials.

In Intersection, Biron envisions an artwork grounded in unity and connection. Two tapering, asymmetrical pillars—evoking shores, hands, or bodies—meet in a delicate lattice of floating “lace,” a visual metaphor for harmony, resilience, and shared heritage. The piece pays tribute to the ingenuity behind the iconic bridge while celebrating the communities it links.
