Public Art Recognition Reimagined with New CODAawards Categories

CODAworx is proud to announce a transformative evolution of the CODAawards, one that reflects the changing landscape of public art and the growing diversity of creative expression in the built environment.

For over a decade, the global awards program has celebrated the integration of commissioned art into specific environments. But as public art continues to expand beyond traditional boundaries — spanning infrastructure, immersive experiences, temporary installations, and experimental media — it has become increasingly clear that the most meaningful distinctions are not where art is placed, but what the art is and how it engages the public. This change will instead celebrate the best works of public art by artistic practice. The 10 new categories are:

Architectural Art

Experiential & Interactive Art

Light Art (sponsored by Signify)

Murals

Projection Mapping & Videos (sponsored by Epson)

Sculpture

Suspended Art

Art for Festivals & Events

Art for Interiors

Art in Transportation

“This evolution allows us to celebrate artistic achievement in a more direct and meaningful way,” said Toni Sikes, CODAworx CEO. “We are shining a light on the creative force itself — the ideas, materials, and forms that define today’s most compelling public art.”

By focusing on artistic categories, the CODAawards will:

  • Elevate excellence within each distinct art form
  • Enable more meaningful direct comparisons between works of similar scale, technique, and intent
  • Better reflect the ways artists and artwork are pushing boundaries today

The focus on collaboration remains a key criterion for this global awards program. (NOTE: CODA stands for Collaboration of Design + Art). The CODAawards are open to all involved in the process of creating spaces: artists, designers, architects, public art administrators, art consultants, and industry resources.

Submissions for the CODAawards run from April 15 until May 31. A preeminent jury of 16 leaders drawn from an international cross-section of art, design, and architecture will review entries for this 14th annual program. Winners will be celebrated at the CODAawards Celebration Luncheon! at CODAsummit Santa Fe, with in-person and video recognition in front of colleagues and peers from around the world.

The CODAawards were born on a cold February day in Wisconsin in 2012, when Toni Sikes and Ilene Shaw set out to shine a light on the transformative power of art in the built environment. The overwhelming success of that first program sparked a vision that grew into CODAworx — the global platform it is today.
