After three decades as an artist, Matthew Placzek's fascination with sculptural composition continues to grow. From small works to monumental creations that stand 75 feet high, Placzek's fascination has evolved into an art form that is both meticulous in detail and free-flowing in design. Whatever the medium – wood, clay, stainless steel, acrylic, or bronze – he creates unique and fascinating works of art.

1. Bear Canyon

For over 70 years, Children’s Hospital of Nebraska has provided compassionate care to patients and their families. A new sculpture installation in the hospital’s lobby now welcomes visitors with a vibrant, calming atmosphere. At its center stands a 30-foot-tall tree, featuring bronze woodland animals nestled in its branches. Surrounding the tree, a flowing stream showcases bronze salmon and brown bears, adding a whimsical touch to the space. These sculptures not only enhance the hospital's aesthetic but also serve as helpful landmarks throughout the campus, providing comfort and orientation to patients and guests alike. This artistic addition reflects the hospital’s enduring commitment to healing, warmth, and excellence in pediatric care.

2. Poppies

Fourteen-foot-tall poppy sculptures now reside in Yanney Heritage Park in Kearney, Nebraska. Made from metal, polycarbonate, and LED lighting, these striking flowers are hand-painted and coated with weather-resistant paint to endure the harsh and ever-changing Midwest climate. Designed to be both artistic and durable, the poppies stand as a bold symbol of beauty and resilience. During the day, they catch the sunlight with their vivid colors and intricate detailing, drawing the attention of park visitors and passersby alike. At night, the sculptures glow with vibrant crimson light, creating a stunning visual display against the evening sky. The gentle illumination transforms the park into a serene, almost magical landscape, inviting reflection and admiration. These sculptures serve not only as public art but also as a meaningful tribute to the natural world and the strength of the local community. They have quickly become a beloved landmark within the heart of Kearney.

3. Atrium Chime

Inspired by the sleek, contemporary architecture and rich colors of its surroundings, this sculpture features graceful, flowing lines that lead to a trio of silver chimes. Designed to reflect a sense of calm and elegance, the piece sets a welcoming tone for all who enter Atrium Health. The gentle form and soothing presence of the chimes aim to create an atmosphere filled with positivity, hope, and determination. This installation serves as a visual and emotional introduction to the compassionate, high-quality care that patients and visitors can expect from the facility.
