UrbanArt Commission (UAC), in partnership with the Orange Mound Library and Genealogy Center, invites the community to gather on Saturday, February 4, for a special celebration honoring a newly installed public art sculpture outside the library. Commissioned through the City of Memphis Percent-for-Art Program, the sculpture was created by CODAworx artist Daniel Moore of The Oxide Studio. Moore was selected by a committee of Orange Mound residents and local partners to ensure the artwork genuinely represents the community’s spirit, values, and lived experiences.
During his creative process, Moore immersed himself in Orange Mound—meeting residents, attending events, and exploring the neighborhood’s deep cultural heritage. These experiences helped him form a true connection to Orange Mound, inspiring a work rooted in pride, history, and legacy.
The completed sculpture features multi-generational silhouettes in colors honoring the historic Melrose High School. Its Double Helix design symbolizes family and heritage, while the Osage Orange pattern reflects the neighborhood’s historical foundation. The piece also includes a quote by Larry Finch: “This is my heart right here, Orange Mound, Tennessee. There will never be a place like Orange Mound.” Learn more about the sculpture here.
This celebration invites the community to connect, create, and reflect on the enduring story of Orange Mound.
This event will take place Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 11 am to 1 pm at the Orange Mound Library and Genealogy Center located at 843 Dallas St, Memphis, TN 38114
