New Sculptures at Port Coquitlam Community Center Honor Terry Fox

Gateway of Giants is a stunning new installation of two artworks at the Port Coquitlam Community Center, (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada). Installed in September, 2025, the sculptures celebrate the incredible life and lasting impact of athlete, cancer activist, and Canadian national hero, Terry Fox.

A bronze figure represents Terry as a child, full of hope and spirit, and nearby, a large-scale corten steel artwork represents Terry kneeling, full of resolve and about to run, during the era of his “Marathon of Hope.” The sculptures work together to create a space of collective commemoration and celebration. The transparencies of the “Gateway” artwork frame the green surrounds, the architecture, and the bronze figure of Terry as a child, creating a path between adult and child that we might follow. The artworks are integrated in the environment and allow the public to experience them first hand.

The artworks are of deep significance to their communities because they are the first sculptural homage to Terry in his hometown, Port Coquitlam. Beyond this, they are an iconic and moving point of reference, both nationally and internationally, and function in symbiosis with the Community Center and its exhibits detailing Terry’s life, his achievements, and the huge impact on current, and future generations.
