Lauren Karp Commissioned for JFK Airport Public Art Program
CODAworx member Lauren Karp, a photographer and visual artist known for her evocative explorations of place and identity, has been commissioned to create 24 original pieces of artworks for John F. Kennedy International Airport. Karp joins a distinguished lineup of 20 artists selected to contribute to a major airport-wide public art initiative designed to convey a distinctly New York sense of place for millions of travelers passing through JFK each year.
Karp collaborated on the project with airport consultant Stanis Smith, also a CODAworx member, who is leading the JFK T6 Art Programs. Together, the team worked to ensure the artwork resonates within the fast-paced, globally connected environment of one of the world’s busiest airports.
The commission reflects a growing commitment by airports to integrate meaningful public art into transit spaces, transforming moments of waiting and passage into opportunities for cultural engagement. At JFK, the program highlights the diversity, creativity, and energy that define New York City—offering visitors an immediate visual introduction to the region.
For CODAworx members, the project underscores the power of collaboration and the expanding opportunities for artists working at the intersection of photography, design, and the public realm.
