Michael Stutz’s 'Wolves' Become NC State’s Iconic “Instagrammable Spot”
For many at North Carolina State University, nothing captures the spirit of the Wolfpack quite like the three bronze wolves prowling across Wolf Plaza. Officially titled Wolf Walk, the sculptures by artist Michael Stutz, long-time CODAworx member, were commissioned in 2008 after then-Chancellor James Oblinger approved a plan to install public art that would give students, alumni, and visitors a memorable “Kodak moment” on campus.
Stutz’s trio of woven-bronze wolves quickly became more than artwork—they are now a cultural landmark. Located near Talley Student Union, the wolves have become the unofficial ambassadors of NC State, appearing in admissions materials, marketing campaigns, and countless campus photos.

Wolf Walk is also a living part of everyday student life. The sculptures act as a backdrop for tabling events, drumline practices, skateboard tricks, and tour groups. Every spring, graduates line up to stand beside—or perch on top of—the wolves for the photo that marks their NC State journey.
While Chancellor Oblinger invoked the nostalgia of film photography, today’s students may have upgraded the terminology. Whether a Kodak moment or the perfect Instagrammable spot, Wolf Walk continues to embody the pride, community, and pack identity of NC State.
